How Michigan fits your IFTA return

You do not pay Michigan directly for the fuel tax on your trips here. You file one IFTA return with your base jurisdiction each quarter, and it settles what you owe Michiganagainst the fuel tax you already paid at the pump.

The math is simple once you have the numbers. Take your total miles and total gallons for the quarter to get a fleet MPG. The miles you ran inMichigan divided by that MPG is the taxable gallons here, and those gallons times $0.4013 is the tax.

Returns are due the last day of the month after each quarter: April 30, July 31, October 31, and January 31.

This Q1 2026 rate is a reference value. IFTA rates change every quarter, so confirm the official Michigan rate with your base jurisdiction before you file.
