Fuel Cost Calculator

Work out what a trip costs in diesel: total fuel, gallons burned, and cost per mile at the price at the pump.

How this is calculated

Trip fuel comes down to two numbers: how many gallons you burn and what those gallons cost.

Gallons is your trip miles divided by your truck's real MPG. Multiply that by the diesel price per gallon and you have the total. Divide the total back by the miles and you get fuel cost per mile, the figure to hold against a load's rate per mile before you take it.

The price you enter is the pump price, tax included. Settling that fuel tax across the states you ran is a separate quarterly step, and the IFTA calculator covers it. iTrucked logs the fuel on every load, so your real cost per mile stays current without a spreadsheet.

Common questions

How do I work out fuel cost for a trip?
Divide the trip miles by your truck’s MPG to get the gallons you’ll burn, then multiply by the price per gallon. This calculator does both and also breaks it down to a cost per mile.
What MPG should I use?
Use your own real average, not the sticker number. Most loaded Class 8 trucks run somewhere around 6 to 7 MPG, but weight, terrain, and how you drive move it. Your fuel receipts and odometer give you the true figure.
Why does fuel cost per mile matter?
It is usually the biggest variable cost of running a truck. Knowing it lets you judge whether a load’s rate per mile actually clears your fuel before anything else gets paid.
Does this include fuel tax?
It uses the pump price you enter, which already includes the fuel tax you pay at the station. Settling that tax across states is a separate step, and the IFTA calculator handles it.
